Drowning in Words

Lena Dunham devotes about 12 pages of NOT THAT KIND OF GIRL to her food diary, calculating the caloric value of every morsel she consumed.
In tribute, still recovering from my cold, here’s my spoken word diary for the day  (note: all before 7:45pm when I teach a class followed by my 9pm budgeting meeting.)
WORDS SPOKEN 2/9/15 9 to 6pm
Good Morning • (said to 2 doormen on morning walk with Belle) • 4 words
Thank you • (Said to clerks at Gourmet Garage, Bed Bath & Beyond, gift store and Whole Foods) • 8 words
Can you tell me where disposable paper towels are? • (said to 3 different clerks at BB&B) • 27 words
Can I pay for this one item in the sushi line or will I be arrested? • (said to clerk at Whole Foods) • 16 words
Wave w/smile to doormen as I returned from errands ª (0 words)
Subcategory:  Conversations w/Belle…trickier but let’s conservatively estimate :
Good Girl • (twice at least) • 4 words
I love you • (probably 3 times) • 9 words
You’re so pretty • (at least twice) • 6
Let’s Go Outside • 3 words
Food? • 1
Total:  79 words
And yet…I feel totally talked out.
While I haven’t spoken to any friends today, I’ve had text exchanges with 5 of them.
I’ve sent and received a couple dozen emails.
And I’ve chatted online with not one but two marketing people for a course I may sign up for–– deadline tomorrow––with many back and forth questions and answers about structure and fees.
And lest I forget the feather in the cap of my chattiness exposure, I’ve listened to over 2 hours of a marketing seminar run by two friends of mine.
In summary, thousands of words have been texted, emailed, and listened to, but even though only 79 have actually escaped my lips, I still feel like I’ve been conversing all day with the multitudes.
(And note, this does NOT include conversations with voices in my head either.)
No wonder I feel like I’m drowning in words…

  1. Edward, I couldn’t help but notice that the phrase you said the most was “I love you” to Belle.
Sometimes I say that to my dog, Bogie, a half dozen times a day. Variations: “I love my girl” or “I love my girl so much” or “I love my gorgeous girl.” She flops on her back and bends her front legs and wants her belly rubbed. And my heart melts.
